I Watched Some 80s Classics, Here are My Thoughts.

Updated: Aug 7, 2022

Everything from Top Gun to Karate Kid, I wanted to find what I liked the best.

The Karate Kid

The Karate Kid was released in 1984, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. It follows Daniel-San, a teenager who is being bullied by Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and begins learning martial arts in order to combat this issue. He seeks to learn karate from his apartment's handyman, Mr. Miyagi.

This movie has, quite possibly, the most iconic scene from all the movies on the list. The Crane Kick. Although an illegal move, made for a killer ending to the film.

I found this to be fun and interesting all the way through, bringing an interest to martial arts in the 80s and widespread success for karate dojos, but most of all, it was the catalyst for Ralph Macchio becoming the heartthrob of the 80s.

However, after watching Cobra Kai, I have found a deep, new respect for Johnny Lawrence and am now rooting for his success, although wanting him to have his nose ripped off by the crane kick in this film.

Overall, the film is iconic and has references spilling out of every pore. Yelling 'Put him in a body bag' or 'Wax On Wax Off' makes this film what it is. A classic for the family, and one that my family has a deep love and obsession with.

Top Gun

I have a lot to say about this movie.

Top pilot, Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise), is given the chance to train in the Top Gun. He struggles with enemies (Val Kilmer), and the death of his close friend, while also attempting a romantic relationship with his civilian instructor, Charlie (Kelly McGillis).

Although this movie is very highly regarded by fathers and uncles everywhere, I find that the film was too scared to go where I truly wanted it to. In other words, making Iceman and Maverick end up together. The signs were all there and I'm truly disappointed.

Jokes aside, I find the Volleyball scene extremely erotically charged for a film that is meant to appeal to straight men, and honestly the amount of the budget that was spent on sweating the men up is too high. I also find that people rarely discuss the scene in which Maverick follows Charlie into the bathroom and we're meant to find it romantic and endearing.

Beetlejuice

Adam and Barbara, recently deceased, are transported to the afterlife and are told they must haunt their house. When unsuccessful, they gain the help of a bio-exorcist, Betelgeuse.

Upon rewatch, this film is ridiculous and absolutely one of my favourite movies of all time. I have seen it many times, finding Winona Ryder as endearing as every other film she has been in. I love her.

There are so many references jam-packed into it, with such a bizarre storyline and series of events that you basically never know what is going to happen next. Plus, Lydia's wedding dress is so iconic, I want it but I have nowhere to wear it.

Overall, I find this to be one of the most iconic movies, and I will always be happy with a film if it includes Winona Ryder, my love. I find it to be fun and interesting, keeping my attention the entire time. I also have the poster hanging up above my bed.

Dirty Dancing

When Baby's family goes on vacation to a resort, Baby develops feelings for the resort's dance instructor, Johnny. Her father opposes the relationship but they hope for love to prevail.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

After having a crush on Patrick Swayze and owning a teddy bear doll dressed as him, I find it super romantic and the dancing is so fun.

The final scene with the lift is crazy good, but I would be far too terrified to even attempt that move. Not that I'm a seasoned dancer or anything.
